Sunsets at the Wildlife Refuge

I have been going to the Wildlife Refugee’s in the Central Valley for several years now.  The accumulation of birds is impressive, but let’s not forget the beautiful sunsets one can experience if willing to wait it out.

Birds, mainly cranes, fly in at dusk and make a beautiful foreground for twilight images.  I had to go thru a learning curve on how to best shoot these without catching too much blurriness.

Here are two examples of my early attempts to catch the sunset/twilight:

I got better over time, learning that manual setting on the camera is not always the best way to go.  I designated two of my cameras for bird photography setting them to aperture priority and burst mode, changing the f-stop and ISO as appropriate.
